Surgical mesh is used to support weak or damaged tissue and is typically made from synthetic material.  Surgical mesh is commonly used in hernia procedures or to repair pelvic organ prolapse. When fatty or other tissues protrude from the abdominal walls, it often becomes necessary to use surgical mesh to reinforce the area impacted by the hernia. Use of mesh can prevent recurrence of the problem, but could result in complications related to the mesh. When pelvic organs move out of position because ligaments and muscles in the pelvic area have weakened and can no longer adequately hold them in place, and stress urinary incontinence, urination unintentionally caused by physical movement resulting in pressure on the bladder.  The mesh is permanently implanted to reinforce the vaginal wall or to support the bladder.

While the mesh may repair the issue at hand, there are significant risks associated with surgical mesh.  These risks include protrusion of mesh, pain, infection, bleeding, autoimmune reactions, organ perforation or obstructions, and adhesions. In order to treat the complications or remove the mesh, additional surgeries and hospitalizations may be required.  Because some surgical mesh is intended to remain in the body permanently, it can be very difficult to remove.  Tissue grows around the mesh and it must be removed little by little. Often, mesh removal is the only method to truly resolve the complications created, however it may be impossible to remove all of the mesh and even with total mesh removal, the complications may not be resolved.  Fistulas and scarring can form after mesh removal causing both pelvic and nerve pain.

The FDA did not initially require manufacturers to conduct studies before releasing their products on the market; however, they have subsequently taken a more active role.  The FDA has reviewed published research, Medical Device Reports (of adverse events), and post-market information submitted to the FDA.  Additionally, they have conducted research on the safety and effectiveness of surgical mesh.  In 2014, the FDA proposed orders that would require pre-market clearance and clinical data before surgical mesh products could be brought to market.
