Hernias develop when the abdominal wall is weakened. Anyone can get hernias:  men, women, children, and even babies. When the muscles are weakened, the inner lining of the abdomen can work its way through the weak spot, forming a sac where tissue can gather and form a bulge. The bulge can be noticeable under the skin and cause pain. Hernias may occur at any area of the abdominal wall and are typically named for the location where it presents itself. Umbilical hernias are fairly common, 10-30% of all hernias. This type of hernia is often found in babies at birth and present as a lump at the belly button where an opening in the abdominal wall has not closed completely. If the opening is less than ½ inch, it will likely resolve itself by age 2; larger hernias require surgical intervention. Once the opening has closed, the area still prevents a hernia risk because of the inherent weakness in the abdominal wall.

An umbilical hernia presents as a small bulge near the navel, more noticeable with strain. These hernias are usually painless, but can become problematic if the hernia becomes irreducible, meaning the tissue cannot be pushed back in. If extreme pain, vomiting or discoloration and swelling occur it is important to take swift action. If tissue becomes trapped and isolated from the blood supply, it may die. Though these types of hernias are generally congenital, there can be other factors that create an increased risk of umbilical hernia. Pregnancy, obesity, fluid in the abdominal cavity, abdominal surgery, increased pressure of any kind, or chronic peritoneal dialysis can all increase the risk of umbilical hernia. Children and women are more likely to experience this type of hernia, with adults at greater risk of complications (incarceration, strangulation and gangrene).

Umbilical hernia repairs are done through an open incision surgery or a laparoscopic method. Open surgery requires an incision under the belly button and the surgeon will push the tissue back into place before reinforcing the abdominal wall with surgical mesh. With laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon inserts a small tube with camera into the abdomen and uses several small incisions to repair the hernia, similarly to the have been results of increased recurrence and complications. Strong stitching, as opposed to surgical mesh, is typically used in children.

General risks for surgery include bleeding, blood clots, infection, breathing difficulties, or reactions to medicines used. Specifically related to umbilical hernia repair, patients should be mindful of potential damage to the intestines or recurrence of the hernia. There have also been numerous reports of complications related to hernia mesh. These risks include protrusion of mesh, pain, infection, bleeding, autoimmune reactions, organ perforation or obstructions, and adhesions.
